Takamine TB10 Acoustic-Electric Upright Bass. I have been playing a Cort fretless acoustic in a group for some years when I became aware of the Takamine TB10 - there wasn`t one in NZ to try out so I imported one from the USA sight unseen. I liked the look of it and thought I could sling it round my neck like the Cort - not so - it?†s quite heavy and is really built for playing upright. It was a bit of a steep learning curve as I`m not an upright player but once I got used to it, it absolutely shines. I changed the strings to LaBella flatwounds and the sustain is incredible - almost too much for some situations. It has a very similar sound to an upright string bass but is much easier to play - I haven`t tried but I think, with its slightly rounded fingerboard, it could be bowed. The quality of the instrument is beautiful and it has generated more interest on gigs than anything else I`ve ever played. It has to be used with an amp as it is not very loud acoustically (practice only). I cannot speak highly enough of this instrument and have no hesitation in recommending it to any bass player.
