Cerveny CEP531 4 Rotary Valve Euphonium. A reasonable choice for the tubist/euphoniumist who prefers rotary valves. The Cerveny is a fine-playing horn with a unique and very pleasant sound. The action suits fast passages as well or better than the high-end Bessons and Yamahas of my experience. Tone is round and full, and has a Wagner-tuba quality you would expect from its size and shape. Easy-playing and difficult to over-blow. Intonation will be troublesome for even intermediate players; Cerveny CEP531 4 Rotary Valve Euphonium is definitely not a beginner`s instrument. It tends to be quite sharp, and reveals its Old World manufacturer who is probably used to A=442, or even 445. It doesn`t help that when the tuning slide is pulled out to its limits to compensate, it can be easily pushed back in merely by resting on the lap during a page turn. Normal upper-register euphonium intonation challenges (going sharp) are seriously exacerbated with this horn, so beware.
Players used to major-brand top-piston euphs not accustomed to using fourth valve other than in the low register will find themselves taking advantage of the easy "pinky" action to reel-in problem notes.
The stock mouthpiece is not recommended. Cup is not big enough or deep enough for low register work, and the rim is too thick and too rounded for precise attacks. Be careful choosing replacements, Cerveny CEP531 4 Rotary Valve Euphonium requires the sometimes hard-to-find "medium" European shank.
