I initially abhorred Bellafina Model 50 Bass Outfit. The finish work was rather sloppy, the adjustable bridge had some initial problems and the strings provided were absolute garbage. However, I have to say that after playing this bass daily for a whole semester (during my student teaching experience); I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the instrument. I am a high-school orchestra director and would whole-heartedly endorse the purchase of this instrument (My main instrument is double bass btw.). Although it lacks certain social graces, you are getting a nice, very playable instrument with an ebony fingerboard. You probably can sell one of the old Kays at your school to a jazzer for about 3k and purchase 3 of these basses new. Just make sure to swap out the strings initially and make sure that the adjustable bridge works--it comes with the action set a little low for my taste, but the instrument is extremely playable.
