Reviews
F-U-N-K-Y in all senses of the word. let`s start with the looks, which are quite funky. or at least very unique to say the least. (the picture doesn`t do justice to how strange it really looks in person and it`s over-all weird vibe. and it is a bit bigger, taller than expected. This funky vibe could be viewed as positive or negative depending on your point of view I suppose). I decided to go with this version and not the cheaper plastic version because quite simply I had room on my rack and felt it would be more durable in the long run, and it does seem quite sturdy. The unit comes with built in power source and cord so it`s ready to plug in and use right out of the box. As for the manual, it`s documentation is not laid out well, but the info I needed was in there after careful/painful searching. okay, now the really important stuff. how it sounds. and how useful/fun is it. I am playing an American J-Bass through an Ampeg Rocket solid state amp. this effects box`s AMP MODELING definitely juices the solid state amp and fattens the sounds quite effectively. this is, of course, a huge plus. and the 16 effects are quite decent (especially interesting are some of the synth combinations, which are better and more playable than those I`ve tried on certain BOSS equipment for example). the various combos of amp modeling and effects can result in hours of fresh sound experimentation for sure. however, the ability to access these combos is a bit. well. once again, the word is. funky. more thought and ease of access would have been a nice plus in this area. but in the end, what do you want for under $200. anyway, I found it to be well worth the cash. certainly some very nice and very thick crunchy funky bass sounds are just a couple dial turns away and many of them as good a quality as can be had anywhere. I really want to stress how surprisingly excellent this unit can be in the funk bass category. it even has a P-FUNK`N effects setting to help out in this area. but it is also fairly versatile. very decent bass-synth sounds all the way to somewhat convincing acoustic double bass sounds can be had, or just add a touch of tubey ambience to a clean sound. or growl to something too clean. also, interestingly enough, my vintage strat sounds positively amazing on many of the possible setting possibilities and many of the 125 presets. and it`s supposed to be good for keyboards as well (which I have not tried). my 5 star rating is based primarily on value, but remember it is funky in some possibly perceived negative ways as mentioned above. still in the end the positives out weigh the negatives. those with doubts would do well to try the cheaper plastic non-rack version at $139 and save some dough.
