The Dean Pace Bass 5-String Electric Upright with its 35 " scale length is a good choice for bass guitarists wanting to get that upright sound at a reasonable price without the expense and size problems of a real DB.
I found it very easy to convert from my 34" scale fretted bass and within a few weeks I started gigging on it. Obviously its not as `fast` as a BG but that should improve with practice.
The stand height was too great when it was delivered and I had to modify it slightly. The stand design is otherwise good giving a very wide range of playing angles and can be made very stable on the floor.
The piezo electric pickups are good but give a rather bright tone for my taste and I have to turn all treble off the amplifier. They seem completely insensitive to external vibration and noise( even tapping the bridge away front the string saddle produces only minimal sound). The output level from the built in pre amp is, however, massive and you`ll have to go into the low sensitivity input on most amps I would think. Also there are no tone knobs on this bass although there are preset treble and bass pots accessible via holes in the cover plate. There is a third pot that is intended to balance the piezo pu and a mag pu (if fitted). This has no function if no mag pu is fitted. There are provisions on the circuit board inside for a magnetic pickup input although the bass is not provided with a mag pu. There are also provisions on the board for other pots for tone, vol and mix of the two pickups, so the bass could be modified for extra sound control if you don`t mind invalidating your guarantee.
The only real drawback I can is that you cant use a bow with it as the fingerboard is not radiused enough and the bridge is essentially flat.
Intonation was good, except that I had a faulty M/C head on mide that made it difficult to hold tune. This was replaced by the distributor within a couple of days. Unlike BGs, the Pace has no truss rod and has a fairly thich neck, so its like a real DB in that sense.
Playing wise, it seems fine to me but this is my first experience of an EUB. But I like it even more than my BG now which has been relegated to the cupboard. The tone I think is fantastic (after cutting the treble), and other musicians have commented on how good it sounds. Dean Pace Bass 5-String Electric Upright
